The 25-year-old Germany international is reportedly a top target for Manchester United manager David Moyes who will require a centre-back this summer to replace captain Nemanja Vidic who will sign for Inter Milan at the end of the season.
The skipper may not be the only player the Scot could lose to a Serie A giant this summer if Italian champions Juventus get their way in the transfer window in which they are reportedly planning to make a move for Hummels.
The 6ft4” defender has been a regular for Germany since the age of 21 when he made his senior debut in 2010. He has since earned 28 caps for his country and scored two goals and is physically ideally suited to the Premier League.
However, Borussia Dortmund will be more than a little reluctant to let their best defender go and his contract with the Bundesliga giants runs until 2017 so they will be in no rush to offload him.
Meanwhile, David Moyes is expected to be handed as much as £200 million to spend on a squad overhaul at Old Trafford this summer – money may not be the issue but if the Red Devils fail to qualify for the Champions League via a top four finish in the Premier League, the appeal of joining the most successful club in English football may not have quite the same draw it has in years gone by.
Hummels would represent a perfect replacement for 32-year-old Vidic who ruled the English top tear at the heart of Sir Alex Ferguson’s backline for the best part of eight years since his arrival from Spartak Moscow back in 2006. The skipper has made over 200 appearances for United and whilst the fans will be sad to see him leave, a new era under Moyes must be the first priority for the club moving forward.
