It looked bad when it happened - which is why there was such a surprised look on many a face when Jack Wilshere carried on playing against Denmark yesterday.
He had writhed around in agony after a heavy tackle by Liverpool defender Daniel Agger - and even appeared to be in tears, so he must have been in a hell of a lot of pain.
But he played on - which is a decision now being criticised by many after Arsenal broke this news earlier today:
“Jack Wilshere has sustained a hairline fracture to the navicular bone in his left foot…Arsenal’s medical team has discovered a crack to a small bone in Jack’s left foot - the navicular, an area of his foot which has not been previously injured. Jack will now require a period of approximately six weeks’ rehabilitation…”
Wilshere is out for six weeks - and although the imminent return of Kim Kallstrom and Aaron Ramsey softens the blow slightly it is not ideal at this point in the season.
It is even worse considering that Wilshere has recently been showing little glimpses of the obvious innate talent he has in recent outings - and he is now out until the middle of April - by which time the Gunners season could be all but mathematically over.
But at least he seems to have the support of his team-mates.
Twitter savvy Lukas Podolski has become the first, likely of many, Arsenal player to Tweet his nest wishes Wilshere’s way…
