French poll picks Chelsea defender as PSG's ideal summer signing

Ivanovic

In a decent online poll a whopping 41% suggested that Paris Saint-Germain should sign an experience defender like Branislav Ivanovic

There is little secrecy in the fact that Paris Saint-Germain want to recruit a new right-back this summer. It is one of the only positions that they don't have much strength in depth, and with another assault on the Champions League planned, Laurent Blanc knows he needs reinforcements.

The form of Dutch defender Gregory van der Wiel has put a slight spanner in the works. He has been superb this season, excelling not only in the league, but in the Champions League too. His form has led to a recall to the Dutch national team, and he started against France in Paris on Wednesday night.

PSG's other right-back Christophe Jallet has an injury, that will rule him out for most of the season, but some fans think this is a good thing. He is not of the quality that PSG are looking for. His time at the club is over.

PSG will definitely recruit, the only questions is, what sort of player they bring in. French website Mercato365 ran a poll asking what level of player they should sign. Only 16% said they should stick to van der Wiel and Jallet, no surprise there. More surprise that only 17% said they should sign a French player, the names mentioned being Bacary Sagna and Mathieu Debuchy. Both players were in the France squad for the Netherlands game, and Debuchy has been heavily linked with a move back to France, and was superb in last night's friendly. It seems the PSG fans aren't convinced.

Of the fans that voted, 26% said they would like to see a young prospect signed, with Tottenham's Kyle Walker and Ajax's Ricardo van Rhijn the two examples mentioned. This would allow for van der Wiel to continue on as the starting full-back, but help bring through a new exciting talent. You would have to think that Sochaux's Sebastien Corchia and Toulouse's Cameroonian defender, Serge Aurier, would be included in that list if that was the route they choose to go down.

The winning option, with a whopping 41% was to sign an experienced right-back, one to replace van der Wiel. Names such as Branislav Ivanovic of Chelsea, Manchester City's Pablo Zabaleta and Barcelona's Dani Alves the three names mentioned. The link with both Premier League players has been mentioned a few times already this year, and PSG definitely have an interest in the Chelsea defender. Ivanovic was reported as keen to sign a new deal to keep him in London, so it would take a momentous offer for the Parisians to pry the Serbian away from Chelsea blue.

Zabaleta is enjoying somewhat of an Indian summer for the Manchester club, his form over the last two seasons has been excellent, but at 29 he is not going to be a long-term solution to any full-back problem. The same could be said for 30-year-old Dani Alves. Ivanovic is the sound choice; he is a better defender than the other two, and van der Wiel. He provides a goal threat from set-pieces and has become one of Chelsea's most consistent players.

When tested at the very highest level, van der Wiel may not be able to cut it, but he still has the rest of the season to prove himself. If he can impress going into the Quarter-Finals and Semi-Finals of the Champions League, then the voters may change their mind come June.
