VIDEO: Real Madrid star nets France opener with sublime half-volley

Olivier Giroud's strike rival Karim Benzema has given France a first-half lead over Holland in Paris.

A key member of Real Madrid’s BBC – consisting of Benzema, Bale and Cristiano Ronaldo – the French international is enjoying a fantastic season in Madrid.

Since joining the La Liga giants in 2009 for a reported €35m, Benzema had often struggled to deal with the demands in Madrid and was at times criticised by the Madrid supporters.

During the summer following Jose Mourinho’s departure to Chelsea, Benzema was even linked with following Mesut Ozil to Arsenal, however a deal never happened.

This season, especially in the Champions League, Benzema has found a goalscoring touch which has given him all sorts of confidence – ultimately delighting national coach Didier Deschamps.

Following France’s 2-0 defeat in Ukraine in the World Cup playoff round, many had thought it was over for the French national team. However, a stunning 3-0 second-leg victory in France has booked their place in Brazil this summer.

They warmed up for the tournament with a home match against Holland, and Benzema took full advantage to show his worth. Collecting a ball over the top, he rifled in a right-footed half-volley to send the French crowd wild.
