On this day: Moyes praises Ozil as Nani sees red

On the 5th March 2013 what were the stories that dominated the football landscape? Including Manchester United, Arsenal and Liverpool.

I am casting my eye back to this exact day, the 5th March 2014, but a year earlier.

What were the main tales from that day? What big events were happening in Premier League football?

Here are some of the big scoops from the 5th March 2013…

No No Nani

It was a year ago today that Manchester United’s 2013-14 Champions League campaign came crashing down around them - with the blame falling square on the head of a Portuguese winger.

Goals from Luka Modric and former player Cristiano Ronaldo saw Real Madrid win 2-1 at Old Trafford - and despite an own goal by Sergio Ramos they went out 3-2 on aggregate.

It was a red-card given to Nani for his silly mid-air kick out at Alvaro Arbeloa that seemingly changed the game - and split opinion.

Interestingly David Moyes was doing the commentary on that game for BBC Radio 5 Live - and had this to say during the game - gushing over the ability of a player he should have probably tried harder to sign in the summer:

"Michael Carrick has been sitting there, but I'm looking at how good Mesut Ozil is. Carrick has a specific job to do and maybe tonight is a night when he won't be the best player, but he will be a real team player."

Ozil played in the flick that saw Ronaldo convert a Gonzalo Higuain skew in another virtuoso performance from the German - that Arsenal fans will want to see again.

Swan to fly away?

Arsenal and Liverpool were both being linked with a move for Swansea City defender Ashley Williams.

The Welsh international was enjoying a sterling season at the Liberty Stadium - lifting up the League Cup trophy as Swans captain.

In the end nobody got him - as his fee increasingly became too expensive considering his age and experience.
