The 27-year-old Uruguayan hit man has been sensational this season after returning from his FA suspension early on – Suarez had narrowly missed out on the Golden Boot last season to Manchester United striker Robin van Persie by just a three goal margin with Suarez ending the season with a tally of 23 to the Dutchman’s six.
That was largely due to his suspension at the end of the season for biting Chelsea defender Branislav Ivanovic meaning Suarez played five games less than the Red Devils forward Van Persie. This term, so far he has score more goals than he has played games, 24 goals in 23 Premier League appearances.
However, the Golden Boot is not on the striker’s mind, according to his comments this week whilst away on international duty with Uruguay – he insists a top four finish is paramount for the Reds and places that as the priority ahead of his individual targets.
"I'd actually prefer not to win this Golden Boot and for Liverpool to qualify for the Champions League this season," said Suarez in an interview with FourFourTwo magazine.
"Any player would miss the Champions League. We've not been good enough since I've been here to qualify but this could definitely be our year.”
Suarez was frustrated over the summer after Brendan Rodgers’ side failed to finish inside the top six or the top four, unable to attain any European competition qualification but the Merseyside giants are currently ideally placed to achieve their objective this term and sit in second place in the Premier League table just four points off leaders Chelsea – this term are not only top four contenders but title challengers too.
"It would be a frustration not to get fourth because we've done everything possible and given our maximum to qualify,” he added.
With just 10 games left of the season and no Europa League or domestic cups to chase as a distraction, Liverpool can put all their energy into keeping their momentum building towards May when, who knows, they may qualify for the Champions League as Luis Suarez is handed the Golden Boot.
