Kroos v Ozil: Who was Germany's star? Manchester United target or Arsenal man?

Toni Kroos & Julian Baumgartlinger

Manchester United linked Toni Kroos impressed as did Arsenal's Mesut Ozil for Germany.

German World Cup winner claimed earlier this week Mesut Ozil was not crucial to his country's success at the World Cup, focusing on Toni Kroos instead.

The 1990 captain told Kicker: “The leading role doesn’t suit Ozil and you don’t do him any favors expecting him to lead a team. He doesn’t have the personality to want to be dominant.

"If Ozil is at his best, he can help, but the recent performances have raised doubts.

"If I can compare him to those in Bayern Munich’s midfield, I think I’d rather have someone like Toni Kroos in the side than Ozil."

So how did the pair get on for Germany in their friendly against Chile last night?

Jogi Low's side took on Chile, and ran out 1-0 winners thanks to a goal from Mario Gotze.

The decisive action for that goal came from a Mesut Ozil assist - illustrating just how important he is to the Germany side. For all of Matthaus' comments - in this instance it was he rather than Kroos who helped 'lead' the team to victory, against a very talented opponent.

From a statistical point of view, assist aside, Kroos edged it. He completed 91 per cent of his passes to Ozil's 74 per cent, and both actually created only one goalscoring chance, simply that Ozil's was converted.

Kroos had three efforts on goal, one on target, while Ozil didn't attempt any, and had 87 touches compared to the Arsenal man's 56 - also making four tackles to Ozil's two.

It was simply an all round superb performance from the Bayern man, who goes head to head with Ozil at the Allianz Arena in a week's time, looking for the same result as in London.
