CONFIRMED: Manchester United captain will join Inter Milan this summer

Manchester United's Nemanja Vidic will leave Old Trafford after this season and join Italian giants Inter Milan

We have known for some time that Vidic would be leaving United this summer after confirming he would not be signing a new deal in early February.

Inter Milan were the early frontrunners but there would have surely been many other interested clubs. Vidic has won five Premier League titles since joining The Red Devils in 2006 and at 32-years-old can still play on for a few more years.

Inter announced the deal on their official website and President Erick Thohir is delighted to be able to bring the Serbian to the club. "Vidic is a world-class player. I'm extremely happy to have completed this deal to bring Nemanja to Milan. He's one of the world's best defenders and his qualities, international pedigree and charisma will be an asset to the team and help bring through our younger players."

Experience is not exactly something Inter are lacking though. They already have a number of older players at the club on high wages and this has been a concern for them in recent years. I imagine Vidic will also be on a healthy wage. Javier Zanetti, Esteban Cambiasso and Diego Milito are coming towards their end of their careers and whilst fans would be hoping for an injection of youth they will still be delighted with the signing of Vidic.

He has been one of the best defenders in the world for the best part of a decade, although injuries have limited his playing time in recent seasons. He has been in and out of the first eleven following injury troubles which stemmed from when he ruptured his knee ligaments against FC Basel in December 2011.

Like Manchester United, Inter Milan can be described as a club in transition at the moment. Since their Serie A and Champions League wins in 2010 under Jose Mourinho the club have failed to replicate their success, and their aging squad has underperformed in the league. They currently sit in 5th place in Serie A and look unlikely to make the Champions League for next season just like Manchester United. Only the top three in Serie A qualify for the Champions League and Inter are 11 points behind 3rd place.

Vidic is moving to a club in a very similar position to United, but it is a change that he will welcome and a new challenge for the defender. He has achieved great things at Old Trafford and has decided on a new adventure with Inter Milan. United will pursue a replacement in the summer, and if they can have as good of an impact as Vidic did then they will have recruited superbly.
