The Welshman has been in impressive form for Arsenal
Aaron Ramsey is due to a sign a lucrative new contract with Arsenal this week according to a report in the The Guardian – which will make him the second highest paid player at the club behind Mesut Ozil.
Prior to his thigh injury, the Welsh midfielder had been in fine form this season – scoring 13 goals and providing seven assists in all competitions which led to many talking him up as one of the front runners for this season’s Player of the Year award. He is in line to return to the side for the North London derby on the 16th March against Tottenham at White Hart Lane.
He will follow Per Mertesacker and Tomas Rosicky who signed new deals to stay at the Emirates Stadium yesterday.
It does show a good degree of ambition from Arsenal to keep hold of one of their best players on a lucrative deal. In the past they have been accused of selling their best players at crucial times – such as Cesc Fabregas and Samir Nasri.
But this is a big deal, and if Ramsey were to leave the club in the future he would probably command a much larger fee – and this deal is one to match his level of performance during this campaign.
Keeping players of the calibre of Ramsey at the club will allow Arsenal to keep competing amongst the Champions League places and title contenders, and is just as important in attracting new, high quality players.
Despite his horror leg-break against Stoke City in 2010, his progress has been terrific, and the £5m that was paid to bring him to Arsenal from Cardiff City now looks like an absolute bargain.
