Jan Aage Fjortoft has cast doubt over Bayern Munich's reported interest in Ilkay Gundogan.
Bayern Munich will go up against Manchester United to sign midfielder Ilkay Gundogan from Borussia Dortmund according to the latest reports.
The news would have been damaging to United if there is serious interest from the Old Trafford club in signing the German but Bundesliga expert Jan Aage Fjortoft has cast doubt over the legitimacy of Bayern’s interest.
Fjortoft works as a pundit in Germany and when asked about the Bayern – Gundogan rumours on Twitter, he replied saying he’d not heard anything about their apparent interest.
That must have triggered Fjortoft into reading up on the reports in question, as he later published another Tweet poking fun at the number of players linked with switches to Bayern Munich from BVB.
Focus Online writing that Bayern are after Gündogan. Well! When will we get the Headline: "Bayern want to buy Dortmund"— Jan Aage Fjortoft (@JanAageFjortoft) March 4, 2014
Gundogan isn’t a new commodity to United fans as he’s someone the club has been linked with throughout the season following the additions of Marouane Fellaini and Juan Mata to the United squad.
If United’s interest is real then there are two huge and obvious reasons as to why Bayern are unlikely to get Gundogan, suggesting Fjortoft is accurate to dismiss the reports.
Firstly, they don’t need him as Pep Guardiola’s side are graced with midfield talent with every type of midfielder already in the squad.
Secondly, Jurgen Klopp has just seen one of BVB’s best ever strikers walk away to join Bayern Munich meaning he’d be very unlikely to let another player leave for one of his main rivals.
Gundogan will continue to be linked with moves away from Dortmund because he’s a world class player but as Fjortoft suggests, Bayern Munich shouldn’t be a worry.
