Everton's attentions are turning to this weekend's FA Cup tie at Arsenal, and manager Roberto Martinez believes that Everton's impressive display at the Emirates Stadium earlier this season is a good indication of what the Toffees will need to produce if they are to progress in the competition.
“It’s important for everyone to go somewhere and have a clear picture of what’s needed,” Martinez said. “The worse thing in football – and probably life – is the unknown.
“The fixture in December gave us all a clear indication of what’s needed if you want to be successful at the Emirates, and I think it’s reaching that level of perfection to which we aspire.
“In the past, when a team has been able to be successful at the Emirates, it’s because they’ve been very clear in what they’re doing and are perfect with it."
A big boost is the return of Romelu Lukaku, but Everton need goals from other areas and other players, which is why Martinez has told South African midfielder Steven Pienaar to start contributing more goals, and the former Ajax and Borussia Dortmund man is hopeful that his luck will turn against Arsenal.
“I’ve been quite unfortunate the past couple of weeks. The manager has been pushing me – he’s been telling me I have to score more, I have to get in the box, and the last couple of games I’ve done that. I’ve been getting closer and closer, so maybe Saturday I can get one," said the ex-Spurs man.
There could be bad news on the horizon though, as fellow winger Kevin Mirallas has today been linked with the same switch - to Tottenham Hotspur. A £12m fee is reportedly what Spurs are willing to offer for the Belgium, but perhaps Pienaar's failed spell at White Hart Lane could be something of a warning to the former Lille man.
