According to Italian website Tuttomercato, former Arsenal target Ricky Alvarez has become a transfer target for Dortmund boss Jurgen Klopp.
The 25-year-old attacking midfielder had previously been linked with a move to the Emirates stadium for the best part of two years. In 2011, a deal was reported to be quite close and the player even admitted on twitter that he’d love to play for the Gunners.
A proposed move to North London however never followed, and Alvarez ended up leaving Argentine outfit Velez Sarsfield for Inter Milan for a reported £10m.
After three years with the Nerazzurri, the Argentine-born star could be set for the exit door this summer, with Dortmund said to be a possible destination.
The German giants are planning for a reshuffle in their ranks following a turbulent season on and off the field. Since their impressive rise to the top, they now face a battle as their best players have become top priorities for Europe’s biggest clubs.
Mario Gotze joined rivals Bayern Munich last summer, Robert Lewandowski has an agreement in place to join Pep Guardiola’s men this summer, and Ilkay Gundogan is another star who may end up departing the club.
Manchester United and Real Madrid amongst others have been linked with the midfielder, and Dortmund’s interest in Alvarez may be a case of Klopp lining-up a possible replacement, although it was in a further forward role in which he has flourished this season, more similar to the one Shinji Kagawa used to perform for the Bundesliga side.
The Argentine has been Inter’s standout performer this season, scoring four goals and adding a further seven assists in 22 Serie A starts. Rated at €16.5m by transfermarkt.com, It may take a figure higher than that for Walter Mazzarri to consider selling.
