Manchester United were unceremoniously dumped out of the Europa League a couple of seasons back by an absolutely rampant Athletic Bilbao side containing the likes of Javi Martinez, Fernando Llorente and Iker Muniain.
While many stood out in that tie - it was the latter who really caught the eye.
Muniain was sensational throughout the game - showing off his dribbling proficiency and passing excellence throughout both legs and it even led to calls from many a United fan for Fergie to snap him up.
Last season however he struggled, but has come roaring back to life in recent months as Bilbao chase a Champions League spot.
Yesterday was a special occasion for the player - as he became the Spanish under-21 side’s most capped player after featuring for the 28th time against Germany last night.
The 2-0 win saw Muniain, who made his under-21 debut in 2011 and has one full cap, overtake Manchester United goalkeeper David De Gea and former Atletico Madrid defender Santi - who were tied on 27 caps.
For De Gea however there was clearly no bitterness toward losing the accolade.
The United keeper took to Twitter this afternoon to send his congratulations to the diminutive forward for reaching the milestone.
Enhorabuena @IkerMuniain19 por ese récord de partidos con la Sub-21!! Has tardado mucho en quitarmemelo Nadie mejor que tu para superarlo— David De Gea (@D_DeGea) March 5, 2014
Congratulations @ IkerMuniain19 for that record matches with the U-21! You've been a long time quitarmemelo. Who better than you to overcome
Maybe De Gea can convince the once again impressive Muniain to come and play in Manchester - United could use the help.
