Lazar Markovic is making quite a name for himself at Benfica, with some impressive performances and vital goals.
Prior to the 19-year-old’s move from Partizan Belgrade last summer, he was reportedly attracting interest from Chelsea. And despite instead making the switch to Portugal, it has since been reported that the Blues have an agreement in place to sign Markovic in the future for €15million.
With the player’s agent Pini Zahavi recently stating that his client would remain at Benfica next season, it seems that if an agreement does exist with Jose Mourinho’s side, it is one that may only be activated once Chelsea feel the player is experienced enough to move to the Premier League.
After all, despite his trajectory Markovic remains a teenager.
In fact, his relative anonymity despite his considerable talent is something he has been talking about in a television interview and later published by newspaper A Bola.
“I am still not famous,” he said. “I go where I want without problems. But fame does not frighten me. Here I start a new stage, winning titles.”
Hopefully that will be the case, with Benfica flying high in the Primeira Liga.
He recently scored vital (and potential title-winning) goals against Sporting Lisbon and Guimaraes, but he is keeping his feet firmly on the ground.
“I just want to keep playing good games and succeeding,” he said.
And one day, if the rumours are true, he could be doing just that at Stamford Bridge.
