£37.1m Manchester United star Mata sight-sees in Chester after international snub

Mata Martinez Spain

Juan Mata has taken a calm approach to his time off - after being snubbed by Spain for international duty.

This week was not a good week to be dropped from your national squad - especially if it happens to be perhaps the most competitive squad on the planet.

With just a few months to go, and no more friendlies before provisional squads are announced in May, losing your place now might just mean you are watching the World Cup from home.

For Juan Mata - that might just be the case.

His season has been troubled.

His lack of defensive qualities did not adhere him to the belief of Jose Mourinho - and he soon found himself out of favour at Stamford Bridge.

But a January move to Manchester United, for a whopping £37.1 million, was supposed to be the kick-start his season.

Unfortunately he has struggled at United as well as 2013-14 begins to look increasingly like a write off.

He was not selected in the squad for tonight’s marquee international friendly with Italy at the Vicente Calderon in Madrid.

So how has he been spending his time off - with no club training due to the multitude of players who have been called up by their respective nations.

According to his Twitter account - he appears to have gone sightseeing around Chester.

It seems Mata has decided to take in some of the famous spots of his new neighbourhood - including Chester cathedral.

It is a nice picture, apart from the random woman photo-bombing him (or is that old team-mate David Luiz), but as nice as Chester is - we imagine he would rather be in Madrid right now with his international pals.

A good end to the season is definitely needed - or Mata can go on a summer tour of all the UK’s major cathedrals.
