Twitter apologises following security hacking false alarm

Password reset notices sent out to Tweeters were due to a system error, Twitter claims.

Some Tweeters were cut silent this week after the social network reset their passwords. An email sent to the unsuspecting users stated, ‘Twitter believes that your account may have been compromised by a website or service not associated with Twitter’.

Unsurprisingly speculative tweets of an attack from hackers soon began to circulate the social network.

Twitter were quick to reassure that the email was a mistake. In a subsequent statement users were informed, ‘We unintentionally sent some password reset notices tonight due to a system error… We apologize to the affected users for the inconvenience'.

So the whole affair looks like a false alarm on Twitter’s part. If anyone has any information to the contrary we’d love to hear about it.
