Spanish press: Atletico and Chelsea linked with surprise GK deal, £26m Spurs man to Roma?

All the latest transfer news from the Spanish press.

According to the Spanish paper AS – led by journalist Manolete – Atletico Madrid and Chelsea could agree to an astonishing goalkeeping deal.

Atletico Madrid have had current Belgian international Thibaut Courtois on loan for the past two and a half years, and his progress has been astonishing. At such a young age, the 21-year-old is regarded as one of the best shot-stoppers in the game and simply belongs in the first-team of a top club, yet Jose Mourinho has firmly denied any hopes of him returning to the Spanish capital.

The Portuguese boss however is said to be willing to make a compromise. Reports suggest that Courtois will return to Chelsea as planned, yet current Chelsea number one Petr Cech will instead be the man who makes the move to Madrid.

The debate regarding which goalkeeper deserves the number one spot at Stamford Bridge next season could go on for hours. But, if numbers, clean sheets and reviews are to go by, there could be only one winner and that’s Courtois.

Whether it’s a case of Chelsea wanting to show their gratitude for Courtois’ development by offering them another quality goalkeeper or Mourinho simply favouring the youngster, it’s an unpredictable situation and one which could cause a lot of controversy when the time comes to decide this summer.

In other news, AS also report that Spanish striker Roberto Soldado could leave Tottenham Hotspur after just a year in North London.

The 28-year-old hasn’t adapted well to the fast pace of the Premier League, netting just six goals - four from the penalty spot - in 20 starts. The club reported to be interested is Italian side AS Roma, as they believe Soldado’s physical presence in the box could be a huge asset in Serie A.

Despite the Spanish international’s rather underwhelming debut season in England, it would seem bizarre if Spurs didn’t at least give their £26m investment another season to see if he can reproduce his once phenomenal La Liga goalscoring form in a Tottenham shirt.
