Reports in Germany state that Bayern are set to launch a shock move for the 23-year-old midfielder, in a bid to add him to recent signings from Borussia Dortmund Mario Gotze and Robert Lewandowski - despite Bayern suggesting they wouldn't be trying to steal any more Dortmund players away from the club just weeks ago.
The former Nurnberg man has been a key part of Jurgen Klopp's side since his 2011 move to Signal Iduna Park, but has recently been linked with a move to Manchester United, with David Moyes looking to strengthen his squad - particularly his midfield.
In fact, the strongest rumour in recent weeks has been that Bayern midfielder Toni Kroos is a prime target for United this summer, with the German international reportedly unhappy at the Allianz Arena. It seems Bayern's plan would be to replace Kroos with Gundogan, but the whole situation could create a domino effect between the clubs and players.
Should Bayern allow Kroos to leave the club, Gundogan could become their #1 target, but if United choose to move for the Dortmund midfield maestro, then Bayern could be left with an unhappy midfielder - with that in mind, what should United do in the transfer window regarding the two midfielders?
