Per Mertesacker has signed a new contract to stay at Arsenal and it appears he always wanted to be a Gunner.
Shortly after news broke that he’d committed to a contract beyond 2015, the big German himself posted a picture through his Twitter account which shows him playing football as a youngster in an Arsenal shirt.
Mertesacker started his senior career with Hannover in 2003 progressing to the first team before a €5 million deal which took him to Werder Bremen where he cemented a reputation for himself as one of the most consistent centre backs in Germany.
It’s that consistency which caused Arsene Wenger to snap him up on a four-year deal following a heavy 8-2 loss away to Manchester United in the Premier League and it seems to be a move he always wanted.
Mertesacker has formed one of the best defensive partnerships in England and Europe next to Laurent Koscielny which has seen the pair of them form the spine of an Arsenal side, which has achieved some impressive wins in the recent past; champions League wins at Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund to name just two.
He could now be set to finish his career at the Emirates Stadium.
