‘On my first visit to England I bought an Arsenal shirt,’ says proud defender

Per Mertesacker

Arsenal defender Per Mertesacker has been speaking after signing a new deal with the North London club.

Arsenal have announced that Tomas Rosicky and Per Mertesacker have both signed new contracts with the club.

It is news that will no doubt be welcomed by Gunners fans, with both men playing a huge part in the side’s campaign to date and impressing throughout.

The German is tipped by many to become the new permanent captain of Arsene Wenger’s side, and speaking after signing the contract, he revealed just how far back his affinity with Arsenal goes.

It was easy for me to commit myself to the club,” the German international told the club’s official website. “We have a great team here and we all want to do our best to win trophies.

“On my first visit to England as a boy I brought an Arsenal jersey as a souvenir and was so proud wearing it when playing football with my friends.

“Many years later, I have become a real Gunner, being even more proud to wear the Arsenal jersey.”

That is quite a turnaround for the young child playing football with his friends in the shirt of a side he could only dream of representing.

But now that dream has come true, and he will be hoping to help his side claim a trophy or two this season, with the dream of plenty more to follow.

He is now a regular in Wenger’s starting line-up, having played all but two of the club’s Premier League fixtures to date and every minute of their Champions League campaign.
