German legend Lothar Matthaus has revealed he believes FC Schalke youngster Julain Draxler could replace Bayern Munich winger Franck Ribery.
The £37 million rated attacking star has been linked with high profile moves to Arsenal in the Premier League and the Bundesliga champions in a potential tug of war which could bit and take effect this summer.
If both clubs make official moves for the 20-year-old then Matthaus believes that Bayern Munich hold the power in relation to his future.
“Julian Draxler from Schalke 04 could (replace Ribery), he is one of the biggest talents in Germany. The contact between the two clubs is there. This change could do his development well,” he told Welt.de.
Ribery is one of the most important attacking components of Bayern Munich’s team so it’s only natural that they will look to invest in a top quality player to fill the void which will be created when the Frenchman eventually leaves or retires.
Bayern have proven time and time again that they don’t have a problem when it comes to buying from other clubs inside Germany despite the criticism it naturally gets them.
It’s shaping up as though Draxler will have two choices this summer; move to the Premier League or stay inside Germany.
Arsenal are well represented in terms of Germans who could help Draxler settle in so life away from the Bundesliga wouldn’t be a problem for someone who is still a very young man.
The biggest problem Arsenal have is that if Bayern and Pep Guardiola have already decided they want Draxler this summer, they have to be prepared for a bidding war and the guaranteed success and silverware which Bayern represents.
