A round up of the latest news stories and transfer rumours about Liverpool from the past 24 hours.
Brendan Rodgers will be backed in the transfer market this summer despite well publicised financial losses. Liverpool have just revealed losses of almost £50 million but managing director Ian Ayre says Rodgers won’t feel the impact.
“I think what we have seen this year is that starting to grow and prosper. And we'll continue to add to the team and support him in putting additional players into the group,” said Ayre.
Liverpool defender Daniel Agger says Raheem Sterling’s form this season means he deserves a place in the England World Cup squad heading to Brazil. Sterling is due to feature against Denmark tomorrow night at Wembley.
“It's a great opportunity for him. If he continues what he is doing right now I cannot see why not make the World Cup squad. He is a great, great talent and has some qualities England can use,” Agger told the Liverpool Echo.
Former Liverpool midfielder Xabi Alonso says he has no regrets over leaving Liverpool for Real Madrid suggesting he needed a change after five years on Merseyside.
“In 2009, I think I made the right decision. After five years at Liverpool, I needed a change. Can you expect anything better than Real Madrid, the greatest and most demanding club? It was the right moment to seize the opportunity,” said the Spaniard according to France Football.
In transfer news, Liverpool continue to be connected to a £16 million deal for Benfica wide man Nicolas Gaitan. The Mirror suggests Brendan Rodgers will move for the player in the summer as he looks to bolster his attacking options.
However, the club could struggle to fend off interest from Russian side Zenit St Petersburg who reportedly have a ‘secret’ agreement with Benfica where they are told about all offers coming in for the 26-year-old. The clause or agreement was reportedly included in the deal for Axel Witsel.
Daniel Agger has played down speculation that he could leave the club in the summer. The Dane has struggled to force his way into the side on a regular basis following injury but has suggested he won’t be going anywhere.
“I hope so, I can’t see why I shouldn’t be there (when asked about his Liverpool future). There’s always talk, but I’m here now and that’s the most important thing,” he told Sky Sports.
In other news, former Liverpool star John Aldridge claims Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho is running scared of Brendan Rodgers’ side.
“Jose Mourinho is scared of Liverpool. The Reds are breathing down Chelsea’s necks and they have the Portuguese manager worried,” said Aldridge.
