Liverpool fans react on Twitter to Vertonghen rumours

Jan Vertonghen

Jan Vertonghen has been linked with a summer switch to Anfield if Spurs fail to finish in the top four.

Reports were everywhere yesterday which suggested Liverpool were positioning themselves for an attempt to sign Belgian defender Jan Vertonghen from Tottenham Hotspur.

The left sided centre back has refused to rule out leaving White Hart Lane at the end of the season if Tim Sherwood’s men fail to secure Champions League football for the 2014/2015 season.

“What I want is to be playing in the Champions League with Tottenham, so I hope we get in this year. Do I have a decision to make if we don't? I can't say anything about that. Let's see after the end of the season, after the World Cup,” he told the Evening Standard.

Liverpool are looking like one of the sure fire bets to finish in the top four, with many suggesting Brendan Rodgers’ team still have a very good chance of winning the Premier League title.

Champions League football means they will have to improve their squad over the summer to prepare for a tougher challenge next season and Vertonghen could certainly do a job in Liverpool’s back four.

The one area of this current Liverpool side which has been criticised is the defence, with the 4-3 win at Swansea City showing possible weaknesses in that area which can be addressed with the addition of an extra body.

Vertonghen is an extremely tall, quick and versatile defender who could play on the left hand side of central defence for Rodgers, occasionally filling in at left-back when needed.

The obvious counter argument is that Liverpool already have two similar players in the form of Daniel Agger and Mamadou Sakho, which suggests there is no pressing need for a player of Vertonghen’s type.

The rumour has prompted varying responses from Liverpool fans on social media site Twitter. Take a look at the comments from those for and against Vertonghen moving to Anfield.
