Former Tottenham Hotspur defender Gica Popescu has been jailed for three years and one month after being found guilty of tax evasion and money laundering.
According to a report from AP and later followed up by the Independent, the former Romanian international will serve the time in his homeland.
The decision comes just days before he was expected to be announced as his country’s next FA president.
The offence reportedly relates to the transfers of 12 players between 1999 and 2005.
Popescu starred for his country in some of their most successful tournaments. He was part of the great Romanian team that also boasted the mercurial talents of Gheorghe Hagi, and it was after the World Cup of 1994 that he moved to White Hart Lane, where he played just one season before moving to Barcelona.
It is being reported that the sentence cannot be appealed, nor those of the other seven men said to have been found guilty.
