Arsenal WIN two trophies... and beat Chelsea in both finals

Arsenal have triumphed in two national trophies... at Futsal.

Don't say there's a lack of silverware at The Emirates.

The young Gunners at under-11 and under-12 level have been showing the senior team how it's done, winning two trophies at national level.

Arsenal's youngsters triumphed at a Premier League run Futsal tournament held in Leeds, and defeated Chelsea in both finals.

The club's under-11 coach Mark Ridgeway told the Premier League's website:

"Our kids have just taken to it. It’s technical, intelligence, quick decisions and pass-and-move really. Lots of people just think futsal is about dribblers but it is the pass and move, and the ones who do that quickly and break lines get success, so it has been fantastic.

"The main benefits are giving you football intelligence - the rotation of players, so the centre-half can end up at centre-forward - that learning how to rotate and when the ball changes hands are the main benefits of the sport."

Futsal is a smaller but rapidly growing version of the game, played on smaller pitches and with fewer players, particularly popular among academies - in order to increase the number of touches a young player will get on the ball and increase their technical skills.

It is hugely popular in Brazil where the top players are almost as recognisable as those in the 11-a-side form of the game, while in Europe, Barcelona are particular proponents of the game.

While Arsenal triumphed, it's great to see a number of Premier League clubs competing and embracing the form of the game. When England inevitably crash out of the World Cup in the summer the debate will no doubt begin regarding 'why can't we produce technically gifted youngsters', but perhaps the groundwork to answer that question is being answered right now.
