Aragones believed Chelsea's Torres better than Diego Costa - report

Torres Scores Spain Euro 2008

The late Luis Aragones is said to have still believed Fernando Torres a better option for Spain at the World Cup than Diego Costa.

Luis Aragones passed away last month, to the great sadness of the Spanish football world.

The former Spain manager led La Roja to their first major international tournament triumph since 1960, breaking their hoodoo by helping them clinch the Euro 2008 trophy.

His success saw him lay the groundwork for the continuation of Spain's success by Vincent del Bosque, who led much of the same team to the World Cup 2010 and Euro 2012 trophies.

Integral to Aragones' success at Euro 2008 was the then red hot Fernando Torres, who led the line well despite being overshadowed by David Villa.

In the present, Torres is eclipsed by Atletico Madrid striker Diego Costa who has recently become eligible to play for Spain, and has even been left out of the squad for this week's international friendly with Italy.

Yet a report in Spanish paper El Confidencial claims that in an interview last summer, Luis Aragones believed firmly that Fernando Torres was the best man to lead the line for Spain at the 2014 World Cup.

Their report states: "Luis Aragones was convinced that Torres would remain the '9 'of Spain in the World Cup. "El Niño is the best 'nine' for La Roja. No one is better. We have good strikers, but none as good as Torres to play for national team."

"Luis Aragonés loved to Diego Costa (remember he led to Marcos Senna switching from Brazilian to play for Spain), but felt that Torres was on a higher step."

Aragones belief was based on Torres' experience, illustrated in the Confederations Cup last summer when he confirmed his eye for goal, and longevity with the Spanish national team.

Torres has been dropped in squads leading up to international tournaments before yet always bounced back to show his worth. Yet this season it has taken a different turn.

Diego Costa is in the form of his life, netting 27 goals in all competitions already this season. Torres has just nine.

If the Chelsea man can turn his fortunes around and star at the World Cup, perhaps it will show that Aragones was right after all - but we won't hold our breath.
