Liverpool owner John W Henry has made the fascinating admission that Arsenal did meet Luis Suarez' release clause last summer.
Speaking at a conference in America, he stated: "What we've found over the years is that contracts don't seem to mean a lot in England - actually not in England, in world football.
"Since apparently these contracts don't seem to hold, we took the position we're just not selling and it's been great for Luis, it's been great for us."
The transfer chase became a bitter saga last summer with Arsenal seemingly abandoning their pursuit of Gonzalo Higuain to focus on Suarez, and landed up without them both.
Suarez was reportedly angry at the time at not being able to join the Gunners, who could have offered him Champions League football.
Steven Gerrard and manager Brendan Rodger both played key roles in talking him around, and he not only stayed at Liverpool but returned in the form of his life - and the two clubs currently sit level on points.
Suarez even went onto sign a new contract at Liverpool at the end of last year, meaning the release clause discussed is no longer valid. With the Reds set to qualify for the Champions League, the prospects of him leaving this summer look very slim indeed.
John W Henry's comments have sparked quite a reaction from both sets of fans, particularly Arsenal supporters who even called on their club to take legal action. See a selection below:
Arsenal should sue Liverpool over Suarez.— Chris Gunn (@TheRealTopGunn) March 3, 2014
Let's sue Liverpool now over the Suarez release clause and somehow prove he's ineligible and get all their points taken away. #Arsenal— Jean-Christian (@kizofieva) March 2, 2014
Surely what John Henry said is illegal that Suarez did have a buy out clause arsenal matched it and they wouldn't sell @Arsenal ?— ™ (@GD0N) March 2, 2014
How can Liverpool admit Suarez had a £40m buyout clause yet not get done for breach of contract? That is genuinely illegal.— Ben Varela (@OfficialVarela) March 3, 2014
Surely John W Henry & Liverpool could potentially be taken to court after his recent revelation regarding the contract of Suarez— Arsenal FC (@touchofbergkamp) March 3, 2014
