Ezequiel Garay has been linked with Russian side Zenit St Petersburg for a while now.
The Benfica defender, who has long been tipped for a future move to Manchester United, was reportedly the subject of a number of recent bids from the Russian club. And there had been a suggestion in the Portuguese press that Garay could be gone by the end of last month – when the Russian transfer window closed.
Instead he remained at the Primeira Liga leaders, and they are likely to be grateful for that as they aim to close-out a title-race that is going very much their way.
Previous reports have suggested that the Argentine centre-back is holding out for a move to United; a club who were even rumoured to have an agreement in place to sign him last summer, although that remains unsubstantiated.
With Nemanja Vidic leaving at the end of the current campaign, David Moyes will certainly be in need of at least one new experienced defender. But if he does want Garay, he may still have to be wary of the interest from Zenit.
Portuguese newspaper A Bola reports that the Russian side are still monitoring Garay and had a representative in attendance to watch the 27-year-old against Belenenses on Sunday.
The league leaders won 1-0 courtesy of a Nicolas Gaitan strike, and with FC Porto dropping more points, Benfica took another big stride towards reclaiming the trophy.
While that scenario now seems highly likely, the future of Garay is considerably less clear.
