“We are in the race, we have no other distractions and we believe we can compete for it, but there is still a long way to go – in fact we are the underdogs,” he told Liverpool’s website.
Gerrard has also piled the praise onto striker Luis Suarez following his performance against the Saints. Suarez failed to score but produced a great all round display of attacking football.
“It was a huge win for us and Luis showed once again that he’s an absolute genius. People had been talking about him going five games without a goal but his contribution to the team has never wavered,” Gerrard told the Liverpool Echo.
Liverpool owner John Henry has admitted that Arsenal did meet the buy-out clause figure in Luis Suarez’ contract. The Gunners publicly had two bids for the Uruguayan star turned down; a £30 million offer and a £40 million plus £1 offer.
“And he had a buy-out clause – I don’t know what degree I should go into this – but he had a buy-out clause of £40m. So Arsenal, one of our prime rivals this year, they offered £40m and one pound for him and triggered his buy-out clause,” said Liverpool’s owner.
The owner has also revealed that he expects Champions League football for next season and believes his side still have a small chance of winning the league.
“I think we’re going to make Champions League and we have a small chance of winning the Premier League this year,” said the American.
The major piece of transfer news today suggests that Brendan Rodgers is interested in a summer move for Tottenham defender Jan Vertonghen. The Belgian refused to rule out leaving Spurs for Champions League football and Liverpool have emerged as favourites in several reports to sign him.
In another piece of transfer news, the club have been linked with the ‘next Patrick Vieira’ Rodney Kongolo of Feyenoord. The Mirror suggests that the club will go up against Manchester City to land the 16-year-old whose mother met with Anfield staff in the last transfer window.
In other news, former Liverpool defender Markus Babbel has been tipped to take over as coach of Eintracht Frankfurt at the end of the season. Current boss Armin Veh has announced that he will leave in the summer as he doesn’t believe the German outfit can improve financially.
The club have announced that Rodgers will run a half marathon for charity. The gaffer and members of his staff are running the Liverpool half marathon later this month to raise funds for the Liverpool FC Foundation, the club’s official charity.
