Tottenham latest: Vertonghen calls for improvement; boss hopes partnership can flourish

A selection of the latest stories surrounding Tottenham Hotspur this Monday evening.

Defender Jan Vertonghen has said that Tottenham will have to improve this month if they are to get into the Champions League, with some tricky fixtures against the big sides imminent.

Spurs managed to overcome Cardiff City at the weekend to stay in touch with the top four, but Vertonghen has called for improvement in a month where Spurs face Chelsea, Arsenal and Liverpool.

The defender is quoted in the Evening Standard, saying: “We needed those three points but we will have to improve because we are playing better sides in March.

“It is not just Liverpool we are chasing, there are other teams who can drop down. We are just watching fourth place, it does not matter who we catch. It was not our best game but we are back on track after losing to Norwich.”

The game also saw Roberto Soldado find the back of the net in the Premier League for only his sixth league goal - and only his second from open play - and Tim Sherwood thinks he and Emmanuel Adebayor can strike up a good partnership.

Sherwood said: “I hope we can grow that partnership, it would be great for us if they did.

“We’re looking forward to them building a bit of confidence from that.”

The Spurs Head Coach has also said that Harry Kane will get his chance to perform under him at White Hart Lane.

He’s quoted by TalkSport, saying: “He’s had to be very patient. If I was Harry Kane, I’d be banging my door down every day and saying ‘Why aren’t I getting the opportunity to play’ but he’s respectful enough to know that we’ve got world-class strikers.

“He will get his time.”
