Carragher praises Rodgers' double signing that has helped transform Liverpool

Former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher has praised the signings of Philippe Coutinho and Daniel Sturridge.

Liverpool fans and players alike are enjoying heady times, and one former star has now sung the praises of the man who is overseeing what could prove to be an outstanding campaign for the Reds.

Speaking to Talk Sport, Jamie Carragher highlighted the work Brendan Rodgers has done since he took over, and the impressive way he has managed to compete on the field with some of the biggest spenders off it.

To compete with those sides that have more financial resources…Chelsea and Manchester City can go out and buy absolutely top-class players…Liverpool were getting Coutinho from Inter Milan – he wasn’t really getting a game – Sturridge from Chelsea – he wasn’t getting a game at Chelsea,” Carragher said.

And now look at those two players, who are excelling for Liverpool and playing a vital role in the campaign.

For all the plaudits thrown (deservedly) at Luis Suarez, his strike-partner has also been in phenomenal goal-scoring form and has returned from his injury as if he was never away.

The business Brendan Rodgers has done,” Carragher continued, “to then take that onto the pitch and be out-scoring these sides who have got four top-class strikers, like you see at Manchester City, is testament to the manager and also the players.”

It certainly is, and the former Anfield great has hit the nail on the head: Rodgers has not spent big but he has spent well, while also having the confidence to promote from within.

Mamadou Sakho is another signing who may not have been particularly cheap but certainly was in comparison to some of the players to have arrived in the Premier League in recent years. And yet the Frenchman looks like being a mainstay of the Reds’ back-line for years to come.
