That has been the norm in the league and in Europe recently - but Lescott has played in every single minute so far of the competition, so to be dropped for the final with the much-maligned Demichelis taking his place was very harsh indeed.
Lescott instead had to make do with sitting on the bench - but at least he made it that far.
Micah Richards was once the golden child of this City team but has been one to suffer from the vast sum of cash now available to the club.
He has also been very unfortunate with injury during the past couple of years - but upon his most recent return from fitness woe he had this to say:
“That is the hard thing to take for myself with Zabaleta. In the 15 months I have been out with injuries and he has come in and done an outstanding job for the team. Sometimes you have to hold up your hands and say that he was quality. That can be hard because you want to be playing, but as long as you are part and parcel of the tam and the team is doing well, that is all I am bothered about."
That was in January - and the right-back has only played in the FA Cup since - however he must have been hoping of a place in the squad today.
And his cryptic Tweet added to that sense:
No matter what I just keep smiling! can't keep a good man down..— Micah Richards (@MicahRichards) March 2, 2014
Of course it is not known whether it as in relation to the selection for this game - but the timing adds up.
And it is not a bad Tweet, not a moaning Tweet, just one which signifies his belief that he has what it takes to get back into this side - and that he will not let his current tough times get to him.
I for one would like to see him back at his best - and at just 25-years-old he has plenty of time yet.
