Manchester United want to sign the 'German Phil Jones'

Manchester United have been linked with Matthias Ginter of Freiburg.

One Phil Jones is not enough, so why wouldn't Manchester United want two of them?

David Moyes has been linked with a deal for German defender Matthias Ginter, this week called into his country's international squad for the first time.

The Mail report that the United manager personally scouted the centre-back in action as Freiburg earned a 0-0 away draw with Hertha Berlin.

It's hard to say whether he will have been impressed on the night. While he helped his side keep a clean sheet, Ginter made just one tackle, two interceptions and two clearances, not especially high numbers for a centre-back.

He is though very highly rated, tipped to succeed Per Mertesacker for Germany, he has been linked previously with both Bayern Munich and Arsenal and is just 20-years-old.

His versatility is also likely to appeal and confound, just like Phil Jones, who he was likened to in a report in The Mirror last summer.

This season Ginter has made 17 appearances at centre-back for Freiburg, additionally playing 11 games in central midfield.

Like Phil Jones, which one will eventually transpire to be his best position is still uncertain, but if utilised well his talent and versatility can be an asset rather than a hindrance. The Mail's report states he could be available for just £7 million in the summer which would be a bargain price for a young German international with his potential.

Ginter became a regular in the Bundesliga last season with Freiburg, helping them qualify for the Europa League, which he has been playing in this season - but the competition has also seen the club's league form drop off and the defender too as a result, indeed he was on the wrong end of a 4-0 Bayern hammering earlier this month.

Moyes did pick a good evening to go and watch Ginter in action, with it being Freiburg's first clean sheet since November 23, a run spanning 13 matches. Whether he saw anything to suggest he is the finished article which United need to replace Vidic is however another matter.
