United turn to Serie A based Frenchman as Vidic replacement – report

The Premier League champions have been linked with a summer swoop for AC Milan’s Philippe Mexes in the Italian media.

Manchester United’s search to replace outgoing captain Nemanja Vidic has seen David Moyes’ men linked with a host of central defenders over the last couple of months.

The latest high-profile defender to be linked with a switch to Old Trafford is Philippe Mexes, with Sport Mediaset claiming that the Red Devils are ready to make a summer approach for the veteran.

The experienced France international played for Roma for seven years before joining Milan on a free transfer in 2011.

The 31-year-old has only played 11 Serie A fixtures for the Rossoneri this season amid injury concerns.

Mexes’ current contract with the San Siro side expires in the summer of 2015.

United need at least one central defender this summer and could also look to replace ageing left-back Patrice Evra.
