'No form, no defensive discipline' - German tabloid lays into £37m Arsenal target

Julian Draxler

Julian Draxler is one of Schalke's stars who has come in for criticism today from German paper Bild.

Arsenal transfer target Julian Draxler has been criticised by German newspaper Bild in the build up to FC Schalke’s match against Bayern Munich this weekend.

The German press are fearful over what could happen to Schalke against the runaway Bundesliga leaders after they were completely destroyed 6-1 in the first leg of their Champions League tie against Real Madrid earlier this week.

There has definitely been an element of shock according to Bild because Schalke have some very talented attacking players, with Draxler in particular scrutinised ahead of the league game tomorrow.

“Julian Draxler during the first start since December was without form and defensive discipline,” reads the Bild report.

Draxler isn’t the only Schalke star picked on by Bild with former Tottenham star Kevin-Prince Boateng also coming under criticism for his lacklustre performance during the game.

Arsenal continue to be linked with a big money move for Draxler this summer after failing to do a deal for him at the back end of the last transfer window and that interest shouldn’t falter.

He needs more game time following an injury, to reach his best form and he has a great chance to prove against Bayern Munich this weekend that criticism of his mid-week performance is only temporary and unjustified.

“Julian is 100 percent fit. But we also knew that it lacks match practice. Annoys me is that some were not at 100 percent. And even more that experienced professionals do not close down after four goals,” said boss Horst Heldt.

The manner of the heavy defeat is what seems to have prompted individual criticism of Draxler and other Schalke players. It was shocking but the team deserves more of a kick up the backside over any single player.
