Former England striker Stan Collymore suggests there are only two players who can replace Nemanja Vidic as skipper at Man United.
Vidic announced that he wouldn’t be staying on at United beyond this season, which has left David Moyes with a skipper who knows he’ll be gone at the end of the campaign and the problem of who follows him.
“Either give him (Rooney) the armband or David De Gea because both of their performances have stood up to scrutiny largely this season,” said Collymore in a Google+ Hangout for Bleacher Report.
Rooney has just signed that new and expensive contract to stay at United, which would make it remarkable if he now turned his back on United with Moyes likely to make him captain.
De Gea is an interesting choice because while he’s been one of United’s more consistent players this season, he’s not the vicious, aggressive sort of leader that United perhaps need.
De Gea himself is only 23-years-old and has a contract which doesn’t expire until 2016 and it could be a decision which brings out the best in him over the next couple of seasons, which will combine with contract renewal negotiations.
“I think in the dressing room, people like Januzaj coming through, they need someone to look to who isn’t just in the here and now that’s going to be their captain down the line – it’s very difficult to take instructions from somebody that isn’t doing the business on the pitch,” added the former England striker.
Rooney is the more likely of the two to get the nod because he has the greater experience and arguably, the better personality for role.
Rooney was one of the only players in the United side who showed passion and fight during the defeat against Olympiakos, venting his frustration at the referee and trying to grab the side by the scruff of the neck, moving them forward.
It’s almost a scenario of two completely different contrasts; the high profile, loud and aggressive striker or the calmer. Composed and younger figure of United’s goalkeeper.
