The trio of Manchester City, Arsenal and Manchester United had all lost their respective first leg ties 2-0 - and therefore have an uphill battle in trying to qualify for the next stage of the competition.
So could Chelsea do the job?
Well, kind of.
They travelled to Turkey to take on Galatasaray at the Turk Telekom Arena in what was always going to be a tough and visceral atmosphere - so coming away with an away goal was always going to be an achievement.
And that they did - thanks to Fernando Torres.
But they would have been upset with conceding the equaliser. A corner inexplicably found its way into the six yard box - where former Liverpool target Aurelian Chedjou fired home beyond Petr Cech.
For Chedjou it was a joyous moment for more than one reason - because it also meant getting one over on a good friend.
He and Eden Hazard played together at Lille in Ligue 1 - winning Le Championnat together in 2010-11.
So after the game he was happy to send a message Hazard’s way via Twitter - but to his credit … he didn’t gloat:
“Glad I saw a friend tonight @hazardeden10, have a safe trip.”
