Results have been released today from a survey done by IPSOS for the French league, trying to find out who is the most iconic player in Ligue 1. The results aren't exactly shocking, but there are some interesting outcomes. People were asked to pick three players, and with 82%, Paris Saint-Germain's Zlatan Ibrahimovic came out on top.
This season alone, the Swedish forward has scored 22 goals in just 25 league matches, his goals have been crucial as PSG are on the verge of making the Quarter-Finals of the Champions' League and he is on course to break the 30 goal record held by Marseille’s Jean-Pierre Papin, a record he equalled last season.
It's not just the goals that set him apart, but it's the manner in which he plays and carries himself. You may not like him, you may not like his attitude, but you will always respect his ability. Everyone that has ever watched Zlatan play will have witnessed a moment, a piece of skill, or a goal that you have always dreamed of emulating.
Ibrahimovic does the things in football that normal people can only dream of. He is a video game character brought to life. Who else would try to beat Joe Hart with an overhead kick from 40 yards? Who else would try an audacious back hell from behind his own head? Well Zlatan would, and he has. That's why he is probably not just the most iconic player in France, but it could easily extend to the world.
In the poll, Monaco's Radamel Falcao finished second, with Ibrahimovic's strike partner coming Edinson Cavani coming third. Marseille's excellent fan-base did their job well, helping Mathieu Valbuena, Andre-Pierre Gignac and Steve Mandanda appear in the top eight players listed.
PSG's Thiago Silva and Blaise Matuidi round out the top eight names mentioned, but it is Zlatan that shadows over everyone. He may have finished fourth in the recent Ballon d'Or voting, but when it comes to the overall package, there are few players that can match the stature of Zlatan Ibrahimovic.
