Every footballer loves to score a goal. It is the striker’s job, an essential part of the complete midfielder’s game, and a central defensive player’s duty when going up for set-pieces.
But one outfield position where goals are usually at a premium, unless you take set-pieces like Ian Harte or Roberto Carlos, is at full-back.
Look at Tony Hibbert. Cancel out his goal in a testimonial against AEK Athens and he has never scored a goal for The Toffees in 319 official appearances for the club.
In fact I still have a standing bet with my old man that he never will - with my bob of hair the stakes. He once mishit a cross against Manchester United that came of the crossbar, a moment that soon turned my hair a shade of grey anyway.
One player who does not want to follow that rhetoric is Arsenal right-back Carl Jenkinson.
The English international, who plays second fiddle to Bacary Sagna at The Emirates, has so far played 52 games for the club and not yet scored.
He came close twice - this season against Fenerbahce and the season before, when Theo Walcott was awarded a goal he thought he had scored against Reading.
But he maintains in an interview with the Arsenal Magazine today that a goal will come, saying he is ‘pretty confident’ it’ll come.
But that confidence is not universal in the Gunners dressing room.
He revealed that Jack Wilshere is not too sure - and the pair, like me and my dad, have a wager on the issue - although the stakes were not revealed:
"Jack had a cheeky bet with me that I’ll never get one, so I’ll take great pleasure in winning that bet when it does happen! But if he’s in a situation where he’s one on one with the keeper and I’m to the right of him, I’m sure he’ll have a go himself! I’m pretty confident I’ll get on the scoresheet at some stage – it’s a matter of time.”
So if Jenkinson does pop up at the back-post one day, spare a thought for Jack Wilshere - whose wallet might get a little less heavy, or might end up getting the pink hair dye out.
If Jenkinson ever scores that is…
