One way for a player to prove his worth is to produce on the big stage – and what bigger than a Champions League tie at home to Real Madrid?
The 20-year-old German international has massive potential and is expected to achieve big things, but there have been suggestions that he lacks consistency – and needs to show himself more especially in the bigger games.
Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger will be watching Schalke’s Champions League clash with Real Madrid with curiosity as Julian Draxler attempts to prove his worth, but his horror miss certainly didn’t do him any favours.
Real Madrid took an early lead to silence the Veltins-Arena through a well worked Karim Benzema goal. However, that wasn’t going to stop Schalke from giving the La Liga giants a fight, and they immediately carved open a glorious opportunity to equalise.
Jefferson Farfan reached the by-line before swinging over an inviting cross which Real Madrid’s centre-back Pepe misjudged. The ball bounced up for Draxler six yards out, yet he lacked the conviction and hit a half-volley straight at Iker Casillas.
For a player linked with a big money move, it was a woeful finish and one Arsene Wenger will quickly want to forget.
To make matters worse, Real Madrid’s €100m superstar Gareth Bale quickly scored Los Blancos’ second with a wonderful solo goal – a goal which has all but sealed this Champions League tie.
