Serbian coach Ljubinko Drulovic has backed Lazar Markovic to become one of the best players in Europe.
Cast your minds back to December and reports which started to surface suggesting Chelsea had done an unofficial €15 million deal with Benfica for talented youngster Lazar Markovic.
If that first report from O’Jogo is backed up with an official move this summer, then in the eyes of Ljubinko Drulovic, coach of the Serbian youth ranks, it’s a fantastic investment on the part of the West Londonders.
Drulovic has revealed through Portuguese newspaper record that he believes Markovic will turn into one of the best players in Europe over the next few years which could make that potential €15 million fee look very cheap.
“He’s a great talent and has the ability to become one of the best players in Europe in the coming years has special characteristics in terms of speed, technique and he has the ability to solve a game in various situations – he could be also very important for Serbia,” said Drulovic.
There’s no doubt he’s a real talent with four goals and two assists from 16 appearances in Portugal’s top flight for Benfica so far this season.
The major problem is that the reports that claimed a deal at the back end of last year weren’t based on anything official and there’s nothing to suggest that the player has signed a deal with the Blues.
Just why that’s the case is unclear but it creates the risk that another side could come in for him this summer and poach him away from Chelsea, which would deprive them of someone who could become a very important attacking component of Jose Mourinho’s team over the next few seasons.
What the Blues have going for them is that this has the characteristics of a contemporary Mourinho signing in the respect that he’s currently looking to invest big amounts in younger players who will develop over the next few years.
Fingers crossed for Chelsea they can make it official at some point.
