Liverpool already possess an impressive array of young talent, but if recent reports are believed, that did not stop them casting admiring glances at Schalke starlet Donis Avdijaj.
While Julian Draxler and Max Meyer have generated most of the headlines, their young teammate is held in just as high regard at the German club – perhaps more so given that he reportedly recently agreed a new contract with a staggering €49million release-clause.
The 17-year-old has been outstanding for Schalke’s under-17 side, scoring 44 goals in just 25 games.
But that has not stopped him dreaming of coming up against one of his idols this evening as his side face Real Madrid in the last-16 of the Champions League.
Speaking to Sport Bild, Avdijaj is quoted as saying, “I know I have what it takes. As we continue, it’s not my decision but that of the club and the coach.
“I would love to play on Wednesday against Real and measure myself against one of my idols.”
It is no surprise who that is, with Bild claiming Cristiano Ronaldo is the player the teenager hopes to play against.
And while this evening’s tie may come too soon for the precocious youngster, it appears he has a big future in the game.
But whether Liverpool will still be interested given the bank-breaking fee that may now be required to sign him remains to be seen.
That said, with the players currently at their disposal in forward positions, Brendan Rodgers may feel he does not need him.
