All the players from Dortmund, who were asked before the match, said that Zenit were a very difficult opponent, expecting a tight game. In the end it turned out not to be like that, mainly because of two reasons.
Zenit St. Petersburg confirmed the weak impression they had made in the group stage, with qualifying for the second round despite winning only one match.
The behaviour in the own defensive area reminded one of the Russian hospitality during the Olympic Games, whereas the attacking player Hulk brought his green namesake to mind when he tried to run through Dortmund’s defensive players instead of passing the ball more often.
Borussia Dortmund in contrast had a great match, thanks to their two brilliant attackers Reus and Lewandowski. Reus gave two assists and scored one goal himself, whereas Lewandowski even scored twice. Mkhitaryan contributed Dortmund’s fourth goal. Zenit’s goal scorers were Shatov and Hulk with a penalty.
It was especially impressive how fast Borussia struck back after conceding goals at 1-2 and 2-3, when they scored in each case just two minutes later. You got the impression that this team could have always increased the pace, if it had been necessary.
If Dortmund continues like this, they seriously have to be considered as one of the favourites for reaching the Champions League final this year, again, especially because they have only a theoretical possibility of winning the Bundesliga and therefore can now totally focus on the Champions League and the German Cup.
