Spanish league leaders Real Madrid dominated Schalke in the Champions League last night, scoring six goals in a one-sided first leg.
Talented prospect Julian Draxler made his first start since the transfer window closed, and unfortunately for the Germans, it was not worth waiting for.
Draxler missed a glorious second half chance from close range, and could do little to inspire his team against a rampant Madrid - although it should be noted that the entire Schalke team just rolled over, until Huntelaar's impressive volleyed consolation.
He was upstaged by Gareth Bale, who netted twice for Madrid, turning in one of his most polished performances for the La Liga side to date.
Draxler had just the one shot, with no key passes made, recording a passing accuracy of 83 per cent. He completed just two of his trademark dribbles, and was dispossessed three times.
He will have been disappointed not to have made more of an impact on the big stage, although his recent injury problems should be taken into account.
Arsenal were confirmed by Schalke to have bid for the star in January, but the Germans were reluctant to sell for a figure below the £37 million release clause which can be activated in the summer.
With a match on the big stage, televised in the UK for fans of Arsenal to see, were they impressed? Did they think he could be worth the money? Here's a snapshot of opinion via Twitter:
Every time I watch Draxler play, he always fails to impress. Reus head and shoulders better, #AFC should go all out to sign him.— 普尼特 (@Punz_97) February 26, 2014
first extended look at Draxler,v pacey and confident-so far has missed a sitter and split his own defence to put in Bale for RM second #afc— Kieran (@eslsys) February 26, 2014
Good thing Schalke refused to sell Julian Draxler to Arsenal. That really helped Schalke in today's 6-1 loss to Real Madrid. #Jerks— Wes Rucker (@wesrucker247) February 26, 2014
This butt kicking that Schalke is receiving should make it easier for Draxler to come to Arsenal— Norris Howze (@MisterHowze) February 26, 2014
See if only Draxler came to Arsenal, he wouldn't have to go through this— Zeerak Kiani (@Zeerak_Kiani) February 26, 2014
Draxler has been the only good schalke player, if Bayern get him instead of Arsenal i will genuinely be upset— مظهر Maz (@mazchoudhry7) February 26, 2014
