Tottenham Hotspur morning news: Vertonghen refuses to rule out leaving for Champions League football

A round up of news stories this morning about Tottenham Hotspur.

Tottenham defender Jan Vertonghen has refused to rule out a move away from the club if Spurs don’t secure Champions League football.

Quoted by the Express, the Belgian has suggested that he will wait until after the World Cup before making that decision.

“What I want is to play in the Champions League with Tottenham so hopefully I will get there this year - Let’s see after the end of the season and after the World Cup,” he said.

Tottenham head coach Tim Sherwood is backing Roberto Soldado to pull through a blip in form.

The Spanish record signing from the summer has struggled to hit the back of the net scoring just five times with a single goal from open play.

“We’re waiting for him to take one and then hopefully the confidence will start flooding back for him. He’s getting the opportunities to score but he just needs to take one,” said Sherwood.

Former Spurs boss Harry Redknapp has urged the club to stand by Sherwood come what may this season.

There have been several stories floating around that Sherwood could be replaced in the summer if he doesn’t secure a top four finish with the club.

“You’re going to get lots of speculation at Tottenham - He needs time and, if they give him that, then they’ll have an excellent manager for the future. Why not stick with a young English boy who’s come through [the ranks]?” he told TalkSport.
