David Moyes could consider making Wayne Rooney captain before the end of the season.
Rooney has responded well to the recent signing of his new contract and the time may well have come to give him the extra added responsibility of leading the side over the rest of the season.
The fallout from Manchester United’s defeat to Olympiakos is everywhere today with David Moyes, Robin Van Persie and captain Nemanja Vidic all coming in for some criticism.
The criticism Vidic has received on social media website Twitter this morning is astonishing considering that he was one of the United players who started the game against the Greeks last night superbly.
The issue several United fans seem to have doesn’t lay with his performance, more the fact he didn’t front up in front of the TV cameras following the lacklustre display.
Rooney was one of the few United players who ran his socks off last night, getting stuck into the referee when decisions didn’t go United’s way and having a go at his teammates for misplaced passes and poor basic decisions which cost United badly last night.
Moyes shouldn’t really have any problem taking the captaincy away from Vidic because he’s leaving at the end of the season. It would be different if he hadn’t already admitted that he’d be walking away from Old Trafford.
Rooney is one of the candidates to take over the armband ahead of next season but it may not be a bad idea to let him drag the team forward for the next few months as United look to salvage something, anything from this campaign.
