Stats guru: United only have 18% chance of progressing now, but…

Inside Old Trafford

Manchester United's chances of reaching quarterfinals are slim, says a data cruncher, as the club trail 2-0 after Arsenal wonderkid netted for Olympiacos.

A renowned Twitter-based statistician has calculated that, after coming unstuck in an underwhelming 2-0 loss to Olympiacos at the Karaiskakis Stadium on Tuesday, February 25, Manchester United now have an 18% chance of progressing through to the quarterfinal of the Champions League.

Goals from Alejandro Dominguez and Arsenal starlet Joel Campbell either side of the half consigned United to an abysmal 2-0 defeat, with United looking tactically inept.

United, therefore, have to score at least two when the return leg takes place at Old Trafford on Wednesday, March 19, however, Mister Chip informed his social media followers that only 113 of 645 teams who have lost 2-0 away from home have gone on to claim victory in the second leg, at their own ground.

There is hope for the club, though, as while United have not overturned a 2-0 margin in Europe's premier club competition for 57 years, they did do just that in the UEFA Cup Winners Cup in 1984 when they overcame a first leg deficit.
