A round up of the latest news and transfer stories about Liverpool from the past 24 hours.
Brendan Rodgers has admitted that Liverpool are doing better than he expected by this stage of his career with the club. Liverpool are challenging for the Premier League title and a Champions League place a season earlier than he anticipated.
“I think we've probably moved ahead of where I thought we would be this season. Some of our play has been exceptional, but there are still areas of the team that I feel we need to improve on,” he told TalkSport.
Italian legend Andrea Pirlo has claimed Steven Gerrard has all the qualities needed to play a deeper midfield role. Gerrard has played more games in a holding role this season.
“The intelligent players adapt - and Steven Gerrard has the ability to do that. He is an excellent passer of the ball, possesses an intelligent football brain, and has great vision. He has all the qualities to play a deeper role,” he’s quoted by the Liverpool Echo.
Liverpool goalkeeper Simon Mignolet has urged the side’s defence to improve ahead of important games over the rest of the season. Liverpool’s back line, including Mignolet, leaked three goals against Swansea last weekend.
“Obviously, it's easier to do that if you are not conceding goals and we know we need to be tighter and not concede so many. We are in a good position at the moment but with 11 games to go there are still a lot of things that can happen,” said the Belgian.
Former Kop favourite John Aldridge agrees with him suggesting it’s dangerous for the team to rely on Daniel Sturridge and Luis Suarez to continuously get them out of trouble.
In transfer news, Liverpool could wave goodbye to one of their most popular players at the end of the season. Several reports have suggested that centre back Daniel Agger could be staring at an end to his Liverpool career with Rodgers harbouring doubts over the defender.
Midfield target Mathieu Valbuena has revealed his preferred destination and it’s not good news for Rodgers’ men. The Marseille star is reportedly keen on a move to Spanish side Atletico Madrid over a switch to the Premier League.
“Zenit and Schalke 04 are great teams, but the team I like is Atletico Madrid, because it’s a Spanish club and I have Spanish origins. On top of that, they play very well,” he told beIN Sport.
Liverpool youngster Conor Coady has extended his loan spell with League One side Sheffield United until the end of the season. The 21-year-old has made 32 appearances for the club scoring four goals so far.
Birmingham City boss Lee Clark has exploded with excitement at the prospect of working with Liverpool winger Jordon Ibe. Ibe has joined the Championship side on loan for the rest of the season.
“I am so excited by Jordan and what he now gives us. We saw glimpses of his skill in his first training session with us and he showed a bit more in the game,” Clark is quoted by the Daily Star.
