Tottenham latest: Club may offer defender a pay rise; Sherwood calls for character

Tim Sherwood Press Conference 12/02/2014

A selection of the latest stories involving Tottenham Hotspur this Tuesday evening.

Jan Vertonghen is to be offered a pay rise to try to keep him at Tottenham Hotspur according to a report in the Daily Telegraph.

Vertonghen hinted that he may consider his future after the World Cup if Spurs were to miss out on Champions League qualification. They currently sit six points behind Liverpool who occupy fourth place with 11 games remaining.

The defender reportedly currently earns £40,000 a week, and Spurs are said to be looking to offer him a ‘significant’ rise.

Former defender Chris Perry has said that Tim Sherwood’s future in the Spurs dugout depends on whether the side qualifies for the Champions League.

Perry told TalkSport:If Tottenham finish fourth it would make it very difficult for Daniel Levy to move him on.

“The whole aim at the start of the season was to get in the Champions League.

“If he does that it would be harsh to release him.”

Head Coach Sherwood has called for Spurs to show some character after their last two matches produced two 1-0 defeats away from home.

Sherwood is quoted saying: “We certainly need to have character now to play in front of our home fans after the disappointment of losing to a team around the bottom of the league.

“That happens, what can you do? You can’t crawl into a corner and hide. You have to confront it and have a go.”

Spurs are set to be monitoring the situation of Bojan Krkic, with the Ajax forward said to be considering his options at the end of the season, according to TalkSport.

He’s quoted as saying: “We will see about my future. There are two months left of the season and then I will make my decisions.”

Liverpool are also said to be interested.
