Eliaquim Mangala is on a list of five names who are reported targets for Barcelona.
Catalan based newspaper Sport has produced a Barcelona list of five players who are reported targets to replace Nou Camp icon Carles Puyol at the end of the season.
A ‘central operation’ as Sport calls it has been started as ‘Puyol’s farewell season accelerates efforts to incorporate another into the defence’ and there’s no reason why Barca couldn’t persuade Mangala to move to Spain.
Each Premier League side with a reported interested has a good case for going after the €45 million rated man.
Chelsea need a long term replacement for John Terry and a more reliable and safe option in the heart of their defence than David Luiz.
Manchester City need someone rock solid next to Vincent Kompany and there were several stories which suggested a deal for Mangala to go to the Etihad last month was close.
For Manchester United, they need a replacement for Nemanja Vidic who has said he’s not prepared to play for the club beyond this season.
What each of the three teams has to contend with is the history, glamour and attractiveness of a move for Mangala to go to Barcelona, arguably the greatest side in the contemporary era.
There are four other names on the list reported by Sport, who may be cheaper and easier to obtain but there’s a reason Mangala is rated at such an expensive price and a reason that so many clubs are reportedly ready to go for him.
It will be fascinating to see who wins the tug of war at the end of the season.
